OOS ANNUAL DINNER-MEETING
Our annual business meeting is Saturday, January 10, 5:30 at the Heritage Cafeteria , southwest corner of Fremont and Battlefield, in the shopping center; email or call me if you need directions. We will have a review of 2003, discuss plans for 2004, elect officers, and approve expenditures. Go through the line, buy your supper, and go to rooms 1 and 2 to eat and meet. See you there!

RELOADING CLINIC
The reloading clinic will be a very low-key discussion of reloading techniques and ammunition in general. We will have all the equipment there to do reloading, and numerous members will offer their collective wisdom on the things you should know. A number of questions have come up about surplus ammunition, especially the Korean stuff, and this will be a good time to have a discussion about it. Please note the time for this clinic is 8:30 am, in the classroom at the Dalton Range.

JOHN C. GARAND MATCH
I have taken the liberty of moving the Spring John C. Garand Match to our first May meeting. We sometimes get new competitors at the clinic, and I thought maybe we would give the new folks a chance to try a match before throwing them to the lions in the big one. If there are strong opinions, we can always move it back to the April meeting.

OTHER MATCHES
Joplin has high power matches the 3rd Sunday of each month starting in March. At the last match, in October, Osage Orange Sharpshooters outnumbered the local club members, so if you've never shot a match outside of the Osage Orange, this is a good one to start with. You'll feel right at home.

The Missouri High Power Regional is usually the first weekend in May in Marshall (near Sedalia). There are matches on both Saturday and Sunday. Some of us will be going there too, so if you'd like to try a full-course event (200, 300, 600 yards, with pits), get in touch with me, Les Welch [moreorles_66725@yahoo.com], or Steve Milholland.

Also, the Missouri High Power Championship is at Marshal on the last weekend in May. Broaden your horizons and shoot other matches.

Les Welch got me going to the matches at the Mill Creek Rifle Club in De Soto, KS. This is a super nice group of people, and new shooters are always welcomed warmly. They hold some Garand matches in conjunction with their big shoots, so this is always a nice weekend of shooting. Mike and James Thorn attended the September match and had a great time.

AMMO FOR 2004
We have Danish .30-06 on Garand clips in bandoleers. This is Berdan primed, so it is not reloadable. The Danish ammo is reputed to be some of the most accurate around. Club members may purchase as much of this as they want at the following prices: $3.00 per clip (8 rounds) or $15 per bandoleer (6 clips of ammo).

We will be purchasing ammunition this year for use during club activities. Of course, the reason we purchase ammo as a club is to have it on hand for people who just want to buy enough to shoot a match. But the Danish ammo may be purchased by club members in whatever amounts are desired.

CMP has acquired 12 million rounds of LC 72 .30-06. It is for sale to individuals, and they expect the supply to last for a couple of years. Cost is $192 plus $38.50 shipping for a case of 960 rounds. That's about 24 cents a round.

The supply of GI .30 Carbine has dwindled to the point where CMP is reserving it for sales to clubs only. Allocation is based on junior participation. We have purchased 2 cans each year, and I expect that will be our allocation this year.

.30 CARBINES, M1
A number of people were hoping to get a Carbine purchased. Latest word is that the CMP will not be selling any in the next 6 months or more. They simply don't have anything to sell.

CLUB MATCHES AND AWARDS
In the past we have given awards for the John C. Garand matches and our League Matches. When the Sharpshooters started, we only had 5-10 people on the line at any one match, and putting awards off until the end of the year made sense. Now, however, we can count on 15-20 people every match and sometimes more. We also have people shooting different types of rifles, sometimes at different types of targets. Given this complexity, determining awards at the end of the season has become a problem. So I would like to go to a "cash and carry" basis, where each meeting we hand out cash prizes to the winners. Furthermore, in the interest of fostering competition, we will have winners for different levels of competition. This will all be based on the NRA High Power system of classifications, but we will try to keep it simple and fair
So here is what I propose we do.

JOHN C. GARAND AWARDS
Awards for first, second, and third place, as well as gold, silver, and bronze medals for achieving certain pre-determined scores.

MATCH AWARDS (Other than JCGarand)
1. Awards by shooter's classification (see below) as well as a High Over All (first place) award.
2. For every 4 shooters in a class, we will give an award (e.g., if 4-7 shooters, first place award; if 8-11 shooters, first and second place, etc.)
3. If less than 4 shooters in a class, the class will be combined with the next higher class.
4. If fewer than 4 High Masters, they compete only for the High Over All award.
5. All awards will be for John C. Garand match rules and equipment, but foreign military rifles and hunting rifles will also qualify.
6. Competitors using the AR-15 or other match-conditioned rifles must fire on NRA targets SR-1 for the standing and sitting phases, SR-21 for the rapid fire prone phase, and MR-31 for the slow prone phase in order to be considered for prizes.
7. The match director may add additional prize categories based on age (e.g., junior, senior), or rifle type (e.g., AR-15, bolt action) at his discretion or at the request of the competitors, as long as there are at least 4 competitors in the category.

SHOOTER CLASSIFICATION
Based on the previous year's average score, each OOS member will be given a classification. Please consult the web page of 2003 scores to determine your average. If you didn't shoot 3 matches in 2003, your classification will be based on the average of whatever scores you fired.. In some cases we will look back at 2002 scores to make the classification. Classes are based on 90%, 80%, 70%, and 60%.

Shooters with no Osage Orange Sharpshooters experience will have the option of firing in the Master class or accepting a classification assigned by the match director.

A shooter will receive a temporary classification upon firing one match with the Osage Orange Sharpshooters. After firing 3 matches, the average of all 3 will be used to determine the shooter's classification.

Shooters may be reclassified upwards or downwards only after the end of the season and only if the shooter has competed in 4 or more matches during the season. Scores posted on the web page will be definitive in deciding a shooter's classification.

NEW MATCH IDEAS
We're always looking for new match ideas. Les Welch suggested two activities for 2004 that involve charitable contributions. First, we could run a charity shoot in the Fall, and contribute the proceeds to a needy charity or family around Thanksgiving. This would be sort of like a turkey shoot in reverse…we shoot to buy a turkey for someone else. Second, we could have a charity shoot in the Christmas season, using the proceeds from a match to donate to the Toys for Tots campaign. Both of these matches would require an entry fee and coordination with media and charities. Anyone interested in helping out on this?

Besides charity shoots, maybe we could try some other shooting sports during our regular matches. Two years ago we tried to run the .22 Sporter matches after our regular club match, but they were poorly attended and too hectic to fit into the time remaining. How about taking one of our other matches and turning it into a .22 Sporter match as the main event? We might even recruit a few new juniors this way.

MEMBERSHIP FOR 2004
After some discussion of dues, we think it might be best to keep the annual dues at $30. Any input you have on dues, including proposals for changing them, will be discussed at the business meeting, January 10. Bring any ideas you have to the meeting, please!
