Osage Orange Sharpshooters
News - January 2002

ACTIVITIES!!! ACTIVITIES!!! ACTIVITIES!!!

Steve Millholland and Steve Kemm have been getting us organized for 2002. If you have e-mail you have probably been kept up to date…even so, there is a change in the schedule (as of January 3) …the folks at the Dalton Range had a conflict with our originally scheduled date in June.

January 11, 6:30 PM- - Dinner and Club Meeting

At the Heritage Cafeteria, corner of Battlefield and Fremont in Springfield.. Please be there at 6:20. Foremost on the agenda is election of club officers.

January 26, 8:30 AM - - Dalton Range Classroom

"RELOADING CLINIC"
This meeting will be about reloading ammunition. We will have presses, dies, trimmers, scales, measuring tools, etc., and lots of good information.

February 9, 8:00 AM - - Dalton Range

"ANNUAL FUN SHOOT"
Please be thinking about bringing something to donate to the Prize Table.

March 2, 8:00 AM - - Dalton Range and Classroom

"POSITION RIFLE SHOOTING CLINIC".
This will be an introduction for new (and old) shooters. High power rules will be discussed, as well as some small bore issues,
such as the kneeling position.

SMALLBORE

It is my intention to take a team to at least one smallbore match this year. I hope that the team will be composed of juniors (18 or under), but anyone will be welcome to attend. So far, I know we have 3 interested competitors. Since the dates for matches have not been published, stay tuned for more information.
Most probably we would attend a match in Arkansas) or at the Bucksnort range in Marshall, Missouri. We would leave on a Friday and camp overnight at the range.

MEMBERSHIP

We are working on getting the membership paperwork, dues, and cards straightened out. Please bear with us a few more weeks. If you have problems that need attention (such as immediate need of a card in order to purchase a rifle) let me, Mike Thorn, or Steve Milholland know.

MEMBERS VS NON-MEMBERS AND MATCHES

Club membership is CMP membership. Many other clubs in the state are CMP-affiliated. The John C. Garand matches are public matches open to all CMP members. We also allow non-CMP members to shoot in these matches for fun. In the future, we may request proof of CMP membership and inspect rifles at the JCG matches.

Our summer league shoots are for Osage Orange members, and we give out fabulous prizes at the end of the year based on participation in this league.   That’s a good reason to join the club. In the past, we have allowed guests to compete during league shoots.

Any matches that we run at the Springfield Benchrest club must be open to all Benchrest club members, even though they are not a CMP-affiliated club.

For club members who do not wish to compete but do wish to shoot, during league matches we have 3 slow-fire periods during which you can shoot. Also, we usually finish the competition well before noon, and the range would then be available to members who wish to shoot independently.

Finally, we have club members who find it impossible to compete in the traditional positions and course of fire. We will make every effort to accommodate these shooters by allowing substitute positions (such as seated in a chair for sitting, and seated with elbows on a bench for prone). We will also provide substitute rifles. We have at least one CMP AR-15 rifle that can be used, and I have an M1 Carbine that is quite accurate (for a carbine). These are excellent rifles to use if recoil is a problem.

FEBRUARY

There will probably not be time to get out a newsletter (at least on paper) before the February fun shoot. We will have a variety of centerfire and rimfire target games: rapid fire standing; reverse scoring of targets; tethered balloons, etc. And of course, if it’s a nice day and you need to zero the scope on a new rifle, there will be extra time to shoot.

Bring something to donate to the prize table, perhaps that shooting accessory in your basement you just don’t know what to do with, like the box of .243 ammo you still have even though you sold the rifle. See you there.

ANNUAL REPORT AND OFFICERS

The CMP Annual Statistical Report for Clubs provides for a number officers. I have cut and pasted the titles and the only description from the web page.   We may want to officially fill some of these positions. Volunteers? You can view the report that we have to file at the CMP’s web site. Our report is due by April 1st.

1. CMP Affiliate Liaison

This individual will be the primary point of contact to receive information from the CMP such as this Annual Statistical Report, program updates or
announcements and other official information. This person is responsible for the distribution of such material to the officers/members and other interested persons within your organization.

2. Club President / Senior Adult Leader, Director or Coach

3. Senior Coach or Instructor Information

4. Junior Coach or Instructor Information

5. Local Membership or Enrollment Contact

One person can be listed in more than two categories. An e-mail address is desired. If you feel that you would like to function in one of these positions, please make your voice heard.

RUNNING THE CLUB IN 2002

During the past year, responsibilities have been shared quite a bit, and anything that got done well got done because a bunch of people contributed time, effort, and thought. Things that didn’t get done or didn’t get done right were the result of a lack of a person to ramrod the job. We have had, in the past, a President, Vice President, Treasurer, Membership Director, Match Director, and Junior Development Director. I do not know what the Vice President does, but below is what I feel the officers should do, along with their CMP titles from above.

President (CMP Affiliate Liaison/President)

Deal with the CMP
Fill out annual report
Schedule meetings and matches
Organize meetings
Issue clinic/course of fire certificates

Treasurer (Local Membership Contact)

Keep the books
Issue checks.
Keep the membership list
Issue membership cards

Match Director (Senior Coach)

Organize and run matches
Order ammunition, targets, prizes
Fill out JCG match reports

Membership Director

Maintain the web page
Deal with membership inquiries
Develop recruitment methods
Junior Development Director (Junior Coach)
Develop a Junior program

Responsibilities that might need to be discussed are the Local Membership Contact, keeping the membership list and issuing cards, and the Vice President. The Local Membership Contact is used by the CMP for verifying club membership when someone orders a rifle. Obviously, the person who keeps the membership list would be a likely candidate. I suggested the Treasurer for this, because, after our experience this autumn, it is my feeling that all checks and membership forms should go directly to the Treasurer, just to keep things simple. Your thoughts on the issue are solicited.

NEWSLETTER

A number of changes seem to be in order for the newsletter. Mass mailings were the only way to contact everyone back when our meeting schedule was set one month at a time. Now we have a schedule for the whole year. Mailings cost about $10-15 for supplies and postage for 20-40 people. And the grunt work of stuffing envelopes and address labels is no fun. Also, many more people have e-mail now. We can never get completely away from paper mail; that is true. We need to send everyone the schedule and application forms for the JCG matches, so that’s at least 3 mailings a year.

But I think that the little bit of random chatter transmitted by these newsletters could better be handled via e-mail and on the web. Certainly any changes in schedule or other important notices will be handled with U.S. Mail as well as e-mail, but don’t expect monthly newsletters via U.S. Mail. The schedule is on the front page of this newsletter. Save it and put it on your calendar. (There will be at least one more newsletter soon to announce the dates for Summer League matches at the Springfield Benchrest Club.)

E-mail is a very efficient way for us to communicate when a quick decision needs to be made. The very best way for the club to function is for most of the work to be agreed upon, face to face, at a meeting. See you there.
