Osage Orange Sharpshooters
News November 2001
The John C. Garand Match
was a great success, with 21 competitors. Steve Milholland cleaned
up again, with a 461, earning him a big prize. Second place went
to Jack Johannes with a 453, while Les Welch posted a 451 for
third place. Doug Vandevoir finished out the top prizes with
fourth place and a 422. Our Lewis class prizes (places selected
for prizes before anyone fires a shot) went to eighth place (David
Fuller) and lucky thirteenth place (George Corder). The first
four places received small cash prizes, and the Lewis class winners
received 5 clips full of .30-06 ammunition.
Thanks to all who helped out.
In particular, John and Mark Mead cooked up an outstanding scoreboard,
Mike Thorn took charge of the finance paperwork, and Eugene Spears
worked out the final match places. It's also a pleasure to run
a match where the competitors set up and clean up the range.
Thank you all.
Scores
All scores from this
year are posted on the web on the 2001 Season Scores page.
If you requested certification
of qualification to purchase an M1 based on your John Garand
Match participation, or if you joined the club in October (or
September), please give us about one more month to get you the
paperwork. If you don't get it by December, please let me know.
Summer League
Prizes for the summer league were based on people shooting at
least 3 of the matches. High overall score was Steve Milholland
who averaged 449 for 5 matches (not counting the October JCG
match). He won a blue sweatshirt with the CMP logo. Joe Gleason
won the title of Mr. Consistent, shooting 4 matches and posting
scores between 429 and 435, a difference of only 6 points from
high to low. And those are good scores, too. Joe received a CMP
logo belt for his prize. Les Welch acquired the Most Improved
title on the basis of 6 matches. His first 3 matches averaged
404, and his last 3 matches averaged 440. That just shows you
what attending the small arms firing school at Camp Perry will
do for you (along with a lot of hard work). Les also gets a CMP
belt. Finally, Paul Kemm received the 'Just Yank 'em' award for
having the low average of 335 for 3 matches. We want Paul to
practice more, so his award was 7 clips of .30-06 ammunition.
All the above award winners also received an Osage Orange Sharpshooters
patch too. Finally, we gave participation awards to the two juniors
who shoot with us consistently, sometimes highpower, sometimes
.22 caliber. Josh Burke and Andrew Smith both received an Osage
Orange Sharpshooter patch, a large CMP decal, and a CMP logo
pen.
CMP finally shipped the awards,
and you should be receiving them soon.
2002 Activities
Steve Kemm and Steve Milholland are working on the dates for
next year's shoots. We will keep you posted, probably with a
newsletter in January. We are also thinking about having a reloading
clinic in January. I would be interested in hearing whether or
not you are interested in that. If there's not much interest,
there's no point in doing it. We still have not discussed this
with the Dalton Range folks, so all plans are tentative.
We're still working on a .22
match for Juniors. I know we have at least 3 juniors participating
(Burke, Smith, Webber). I would like to find a 4th person, have
a practice session or two, and then take the team to Rogers Arkansas
for a match. If you have any interest, let me know.
Membership renewal form for
2002 is now on the websites "Club Contacts, Officers, and
Membership Page".
We ordered a boatload of ammo,
and someone's got to come shoot it.
