News October 2001
It's Finally Time!!! John
C. Garand Match
Saturday, October 13, 8AM at Bois D'Arc
(Andy Dalton Shooting Range)
You should
have received a pre-registration form already. If you haven't
pre-registered, please do so SOON.
Send $30 to:
Bill Corcoran,
804 S. Pickwick,
Springfield, MO 65804.
Remember, your entry fee includes ammunition, either .30-06 or
.30 Carbine. We will have magnificent prizes to give
away after the match.
Ammunition
The CMP has started selling what
seems to be Federal American Eagle .30-06 ammo. This is what
they used for the JCG match at Camp Perry this year. Cost for
clubs is 35 cents per round, cost for individuals is 45 cents
per round. We have been paying about 25 cents per round for surplus
M2 Ball. Unfortunately, the CMP is currently out of all types
of .30-06. It looks like we will buy a large order of Yugoslavian
.30-06 for use in matches next year (21 cents a round). If you
get this via e-mail, please reply to me if you intend to purchase
.30-06 ammunition from the club at our matches next year. More
and more folks have taken up reloading, so we may not need as
much ammo as last year. Please let me know. .30 Carbine ammunition
is not a problem at this time.
Clinics
There's been some talk about putting
on a reloading clinic, perhaps in January or February for our
monthly meeting. I know we have a bunch of folks who can contribute
expertise. Please let me know if you think this would be worthwhile
for you to attend. If we are all comfortable in our reloading
practices, it doesn't make much sense to have a clinic. On the
other hand, if 5 or 10 people can get jump-started on reloading,
this could be a real benefit. Just for non-reloaders information,
I reload Sierra Matchking bullets, and it costs me exactly the
same to shoot as surplus M2 Ball (not counting my time and amortization
of equipment). And Matchkings are a lot more accurate than GI
ammo.
I
would also like to do a highpower clinic in the spring. We should
have a number of new members who haven't shot in a match, and
it might be a good idea to have a clinic, say, 2 weeks before
our April JCG Match so that beginners can get used to position
shooting.
Great Outdoors Day
was a big success. John Mead, Joe
Gleason, Steve Milholland, Mike Thorn, Dan Bishop, and even Scott
Coryell helped out. (Scott showed up at the range to shoot a
new firearm, not knowing that it was Great Outdoors Day. He stayed
to help for a few hours. Thanks) And thanks to all; it got hectic,
but lots of folks had a good time with our firearms, and I think
we'll get a few new members.
Junior Program
We have had a few more inquiries
about opportunities for juniors to shoot with us. It is my intentention
to have at least one, and perhaps two, matches for junior shooters
next year.
I
have contacted a club in Rogers, Arkansas about holding a team
match for juniors in the spring. I would anticipate having a
160 round prone match. I'd like to have as many juniors as possible
(at least 3 or 4) participate. The purpose would be to introduce
juniors to smallbore competition and have a good time. If we
go to Arkansas to shoot, we'd probably have a cook-out after
the match.
